Dental Care

Healthy teeth and gums are an important part of your pet’s overall wellbeing. Dental disease can develop gradually, and pets often hide signs of oral pain until the problem becomes more advanced.

At North Balwyn Village Vets, we provide dental examinations and professional dental treatments, including scaling, polishing, dental X-rays and extractions when needed. We’ll also help you understand how to care for your pet’s teeth at home and keep their mouth healthy between visits.

Dental care that suits your pet

Dental disease is very common. Studies suggest that most dogs and cats show some signs of it by around three years of age, and because pets are good at hiding discomfort, it often goes unnoticed at home.

During a dental check, we look at:

  • Teeth, including plaque, tartar, and any broken or loose teeth
  • Gums, for redness, swelling or bleeding
  • Breath odour
  • Signs of pain when your pet eats or when their mouth is touched
  • Lumps or growths in the mouth
  • Bite and jaw
  • Chewing habits and diet
  • How you care for your pet’s teeth at home

Why a professional clean needs an anaesthetic

Much of dental disease sits below the gumline, where it can’t be seen or reached while your pet is awake. A thorough dental clean is performed under general anaesthesia so that we can safely clean every tooth, including beneath the gums, check each tooth carefully, take dental X-rays where needed to see the roots and bone below the gumline, and treat any problems we find. Scraping tartar from the visible surface can make teeth look better, but it doesn’t treat disease under the gumline. Before any anaesthetic, we will assess your pet’s health and talk you through the process, the risks and what to expect afterwards.

When should I bring my pet in?

Book a dental check if you notice bad breath, drooling, red or bleeding gums, yellow or brown tartar, a broken tooth, or if your pet is chewing on one side, dropping food or seems reluctant to eat. Pets often keep eating despite a sore mouth, so a dental check as part of your pet’s annual health check is a good idea, even if you haven’t noticed any problems.
