Senior Pet Care

Pets are living longer, and with the right care their senior years can be comfortable and happy ones.

As your pet ages, their health needs change. Regular check-ups let us spot changes early, manage conditions such as arthritis, and keep your companion comfortable for as long as possible.

Care that grows with your pet

Dogs are generally considered seniors from about seven years of age, and cats from about ten, although some large dogs age sooner. We recommend that senior pets visit us about every six months, because changes can develop quickly.

A senior health check may include:

  • A full nose-to-tail examination
  • Weight and body condition
  • Mobility and joints, for signs of arthritis
  • Teeth and gums
  • Heart and lungs
  • Eyes and ears
  • Blood and urine tests to check kidney, liver and other organ function
  • Lumps and bumps
  • Changes in appetite, thirst, toileting and behaviour

WHAT WE BELIEVE

Every pet deserves
to be treated as an individual.

  • Compassion first

We want every visit to feel calm, respectful and comfortable for your pet.

  • Care that's considered

We look beyond the immediate problem to understand your pet's overall health.

  • Clear communication

We keep you informed and explain your options in straightforward language.

  • Here for the long term

We're here to support your pet throughout their changing needs and different stages of life.

Helping them stay comfortable

Older pets don’t always show when they are uncomfortable, and many changes get put down to “just getting old”. Stiffness, slower walks, reluctance to jump, weight changes, drinking more water or confusion at night can all be signs of conditions that we can often treat or manage. Pain relief, weight management, a suitable diet, gentle exercise and small changes around the home can make a real difference to your pet’s comfort and quality of life.

When should I bring my pet in?

Book a senior check about every six months, even if your pet seems well. Please contact us sooner if you notice changes such as drinking or urinating more, weight loss, a reduced appetite, bad breath, stiffness or difficulty getting up, coughing, new lumps, accidents in the house, or changes in behaviour or sleep. These are not always just part of ageing, and early treatment can help.
