Microchipping

Microchipping is a simple and reliable way to help identify your pet if they ever go missing. A tiny microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, is placed under the skin and carries a unique number linked to a pet registry.

If your pet is found, a vet, animal shelter or authorised officer can scan the chip and use the number to find your contact details, giving you extra peace of mind.

A little chip for extra peace of mind

Microchipping is a quick procedure that can usually be done during a routine veterinary visit, and it causes your pet only brief discomfort.

What you need to know:

  • It’s suitable for both dogs and cats
  • It can usually be done during a routine visit
  • The chip carries a unique number linked to a pet registry
  • It only works if your contact details on the registry are up to date
  • It doesn’t replace a collar and identification tag

WHAT WE BELIEVE

Every pet deserves
to be treated as an individual.

  • Compassion first

We want every visit to feel calm, respectful and comfortable for your pet.

  • Care that's considered

We look beyond the immediate problem to understand your pet's overall health.

  • Clear communication

We keep you informed and explain your options in straightforward language.

  • Here for the long term

We're here to support your pet throughout their changing needs and different stages of life.

Keep your details up to date

A microchip is only effective if the registry has your current contact details, so update your pet’s registration whenever you move house or change your phone number. A microchip also doesn’t replace a collar and identification tag, so keep those on your pet too.

When should my pet be microchipped?

Microchipping is recommended for puppies, kittens and adult pets that haven’t yet been chipped. In Victoria, dogs and cats generally need to be microchipped before they are sold or given away, subject to applicable exemptions.
